Note:
The Beatitudes is for SATB choir with organ, otherwise known as "The Sermon on the Mount" from Matthew 5:1-10,12. With an opening a cappella baritone solo, the setting is evocative of chant, with a quasi-medieval texture. Flowing melodic lines and irregular meters follow the rhythm of the words, while the organ provides sustained support with drone-like open fifths and sparse intervals. Two-part writing predominates throughout, making this an easy anthem to prepare for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany.

Text:
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountain side and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven."
