Note:
Go, Tell It On the Mountain arranged for SATB choir and organ or piano. The choir sets up the underlying rhythm with finger snapping in the first verse, until the organ enters with open fifth repeated chords recalling the shepherd pipes. The choir sings the tune in canon, then in full harmony, before gradually fading away as if disappearing in the distance. Relatively easy to put together and effective for small and large choirs alike, for concerts or as an anthem.
Text:
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere;
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
While shepherds kept their watching
O’er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens,
There shone a holy light.
The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
that hailed our Saviour's birth.
Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And God send us salvation,
That blessed Christmas morn.
